Part XV
Place and opinion
Within a party, where someone lives says far less about their views than which party they belong to.
This part asks how much where someone lives relates to what they think, compared with which party they belong to. Party and place sets the difference between partisans in deep-red and deep-blue counties beside the difference between the parties. The planned chapters ask whether immigration attitudes differ with the local foreign-born share, how much of the variation in issue opinion lies between counties rather than within them, whether voters and donors who live in counties their party lost differ from aligned partisans, how much of county change is composition and how much is behavior within groups, and whether people who move to a different kind of county change their views.
